Tavern on the Green hosted a luncheon at which the R. Brinkley Smithers Awards were handed out on behalf of the Smithers Institute and in connection with Alcohol Awareness Month. Adele Smithers (R. Brinkley's widow) gave the award to worthy recipients Scott Clark (WABC-TV's sports anchor and a recovering alcoholic for the past 14 1/2 years), Leadership to Keep Children Alcohol Free, and Martha Baker (board member of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence). Dr. Ting-Kai Li, director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and one of the world's top authorities on the subject, was the keynote speaker.
