Alexander Likhotal, Mikhail Gorbachev
Environmental preservation was the theme of the evening at Gotham Hall, where Global Green USA (GG USA), an af.liate of Green Cross International (GCI), held its annual gala awards dinner honoring individuals for their contributions to world peace. The affair included a 10th-anniversary tribute to past President of the former U.S.S.R. Mikhail Gorbachev. The 1990 Nobel Peace Prize winner founded GCI in 1993 to address the most pressing environmental challenges of our time: climate change; water and resource shortages; new, affordable sources of energy, such as environmentally sound and solar housing; and the elimination of weapons of mass destruction.

In the mix: Andrew Cuomo, Marie Douglas-David, Matt and Leila Petersen, Lisa Shields, environmental artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Diane Meyer Simon (who founded GG USA in 1993 in response to an invitation from Gorbachev), “green” activist/actress Julie Delpy, and Gorbachev’s daughter, Irina Virganskaya.

Guests were encouraged to take home the potted tropical-plant centerpieces, which came with the instructions, “Please provide very little water and lots of love.” An environmental message for all to keep in mind...
