Q: I’m using sunblock while out in the sun, but I’m still getting red, especially on my face. Brown spots have also appeared here and there. What’s going on?

A: Using protective clothing and staying in the shade are great ways of protecting yourself. Choosing the right sunblock and using it properly are where most people let down their guard. Sunblock should be of an SPF of at least 30 and should be generously applied one hour before exposure and re-applied every two to three hours. Even with these precautions, damage to the skin by UV rays can occur. However, redness from the sun can be treated with non-invasive, no “down time” procedures, such as the Omnilux and the Aurora, which both reduce the damaging effects from the sun. With the Omnilux, there is an immediate improvement in terms of sunburn, redness and inflammation. They’re both painless, in-office treatments that use a light energy and are completed in 30 minutes. These treatments can also be used to diminish blemishes from sun damage and clear up acne.

Q: I want to wear shorts this summer, but I can’t because of my unsightly leg veins. What can be done?

A: Leg veins can be small or large, red or blue, and sometimes painful. There are many different procedures available for leg veins, depending on your specific problem. Although we do remove veins in certain situations, for many of my patients, there is no need for surgery. An injection of foam sclerotherapy can make some veins disappear almost instantly. Non-invasive laser treatments like the Polaris and Lyra are used to treat other types of prominent veins. With these procedures, you walk out of the office and back to your normal routine — and right back into those shorts!

Q: There are so many parties to go to this summer. I want to look a little more rested and younger, but still look natural — and I don’t have a week to recover. What can I do?

A: Injectable filler materials are the perfect solution. Products like Captique and Restylane can be used to plump up the lips, soften smile lines, and improve the look of wrinkles in the cheeks and chin. The injections are given in our office and the results are visible immediately, with a possibility that one or two days of swelling will occur afterward. Sculptra, a new three-dimensional filler, is used to treat the hollow areas of the temples, around the eyes, cheeks and jawline. Unlike other fillers, Sculptra lasts up to two years. The results are amazing and our patients are very happy. It’s like a face lift in a bottle.

Q: I don’t want to put on my swimsuit because of stretch marks and cellulite. I’ve tried creams and massages and they don’t work. Is there anything that does?

A: Both problems are very frustrating. Fortunately, there is new technology avail-able to treat them now. The VelaSmooth is a new technology that uses suction, massage, radio frequency, and laser energy to eliminate the appearance of cellulite. We treat our patients with a series of eight to twelve sessions, each lasting about 30 minutes. After the series of treatments, a difference can be seen. The MultiClear helps reduce stretch marks and as treatments progress, they will gradually disappear.

Q: I’ve heard so much about the “one hour face lift” and the “weekend face lift.” Are these for real?

A: There are new procedures to lift sagging tissue without making incisions—with a “down time” of three to six days, depending on how many areas are treated. The Contour Threadlift is not meant to replace a face lift, but is ideal for patients who have a small amount of sagging tissue that needs to be tightened. The brow, cheeks, and neck can all be treated. The procedure only requires a local anesthesia and is performed in our office.
